How to Upgrade Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0 to 7.5 ? What’s New in RHEL 7.5

Redhat Enterprise Linux 7.5 released on April 2018. Redhat is continuously showing more interest in Microsoft Products integration to increase RHEL foot print in Azure cloud computing platform. Redhat Claims that “Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 brings you enhanced interoperability, storage efficiency on-premise and in the cloud, and multi-platform support for building network-intensive applications, massively scalable data repositories, or a build-once-deploy-often solution that performs well in physical, virtual, and cloud environments. Redhat also added more tools for system administrator to simply the troubleshooting using web interface.

What’s New in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 ?

Enhanced communication between Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows Server with the addition of SMB3 protocol as the default within Samba suite.
Streamlined Windows file system administration with Windows Distributed File System (DFS) support for SMBv2 and SMBv3, allowing a Windows system administrator to combine multiple SMB file systems into a single virtual file system.
Reduced risk of data theft by helping system and cloud admins connect to Microsoft Azure file storage share—either from on-premise or from a different Azure region—through encryption support of the SMB3 protocol for CIFS shares
Improved performance for Red Hat Enterprise Linux IdM server in complex Microsoft Active Directory configurations and when dealing with tens of thousands of user entries.
Enhanced security for third-party containers, like those from the Red Hat Container Catalog and other containers that need systemd integration with additional fine-grained SELinux protections
on control groups
Strengthened container host security by removing container root users from automatic access to the host layer
An easy-to-use web interface, the cockpit admin console, provides management of individual systems, and includes additional use cases for network and storage management including support for virtual data optimizer (VDO).

Upgrade from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0 (RHEL 7.0) to 7.5 (RHEL 7.5) ?

Here is the step by step procedure to upgrade Redhat Enterprise Linux 7.0 to 7.5 .

Assumptions :

System doesn’t have internet connectivity
Redhat satellite is not exist in the environment.

1. Take the full backup of the server .

2. If the servers is a virtual machine , you could take a snapshot for faster rollback. This will help in-case if there is an issue with an upgrade.

3. If the firewall opened to Redhat on your server network , you could upgrade using Red Hat Subscription for upgrade. Since the latest release is RHEL 7.5 , you no need to set specific version in subscription-manager. Just run yum update to update the system from 7.0 to 7.5.

# yum update -y

4. If the system doesn’t have internet connectivity , you could download RHEL 7.5 from the system where you have internet connectivity and transfer the ISO to the server which you need to upgrade.

5. Here RHEL ISO image kept in /var directory. Mount the ISO under /mnt .

# mount -t iso9660 -o loop /var/RHEL7.5.iso /mnt

6. If you do not want to keep the RHEL 7.5 repository locally on the system , you can skip this step.

# rsync -avz /mnt /var/repo7.5/

7. Configure the repo . Navigate to /etc/yum.repos.d and create file called uaans75.repo. (You can give any name to the file but it must be ended with “.repo” extension.)

Note : Whoever skipped step 6 , they must update “baseurl=file:///mnt” in /etc/yum.repos.d

9. Proceed with OS upgrade using yum update.

Cleanup :

1. Un-mount the ISO image.
2. Whoever directly used ISO image for upgrade (without copying locally). remove the repository configuration file from /etc/yum.respos.d directory.
