How to create a port group on vSphere Standard switch

How to create a port group for vSphere standard switch ? Why do we need port groups ? Port group is responsible to make the network connectivity between Virtual Machine and vSwitch. It also allows to segregate the network by creating multiple port groups based on the VM environment (Ex: PROD , QUT , TEST).  It allows to define a VLAN . This article will demonstrates that how to create a new port group and assigned to the existing virtual machine.

1. Login to vCenter as administrator.

2. Select the vSphere host and navigate to configure tab. In the networking tab , click on virtual switches & Add Networking.

3. Select Virtual machine Port group for a standard vSwitch.

4. Select vswitch depends on your requirement . Here I have selected vswtich1.

5. Enter the network label for new port group . If you have a VLAN in existing network , you could enter the VLAN ID.

6. Click Finish to create the virtual machine port group.

7. Here you can see the newly created port group.

8.Here is the view from vsphere web client – Flash.

9. Let’s assign VM to this port group . Select the virtual machine – > From Actions – > click on EDIT.

10. Browse to find the newly created port group.

11. Select the newly created VM port group.

12. By default , changes are highlighted in vsphere. Here you can see that network port group has been changed.

13. Here you can see that  VM network got changed to newly created port group successfully.
