Cloud ends Data-center Virtualization ? VMware’s Future ?

Does Cloud end the Data-center virtualization journey? We could see the buzz around cloud technologies from the past few years and Cloud service providers also keep posting great revenues. Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure are leading cloud service providers in IaaS. Forrester predicts that along with Google cloud platform, these three companies will hold 76% of cloud services by 2018.

But at the same time, VMware has its own story. VMware is a monopoly in data-center virtualization. VMware claims that they have more than 500,000 customers around the world. In the recent financial report of VMware shows that their product and services bring around $6+ billion dollars which beat most of the Fortune 500 company’s revenue in the world.

How VMware can pull the audience towards on-premise data-center?

VMware has collaborated with leading cloud service provider Amazon (AWS) and offered hybrid cloud solutions to their customers. In on-premise data-center, if you do not have enough capacity for compute or storage, you could simply move the VM to the AWS cloud using vMotion. Once you have added the capacity in the on-premise datacenter, You should be able to migrate back. How simple is it?

VMware – AWS – Cloud

Hosting the services on On-premise data-center is very costly. It’s because of SAN, Fibre Networks, Data-center space, etc. VMware has eliminated the need of SAN by using the x86 servers internal storage space as vSAN.  It provides a lot of flexibility to the customers. It reduced the ToC and operating cost significantly. At the same time, there is no compromise on performance. The modern SSD technologies play a big role here.

Due to robust virtualization features &  Multi-socket/core/threads system, VM density has been increased in recent years. Now, Challenging has been shifted from managing the physical servers to managing VM’s. To manage the thousands of VM’s, you must have the right tools to ensure the VM stability, Consistent across the environment. VMware has come up with tools like vRealize Operations, Orchestrator and Automation which could simplify the virtual machine management. These tools provide unified monitoring, dynamic provisioning, real-time performance management, and capacity management. vRealize has brought a lot of maturity in virtualization management.

vRealize Life Cycle Management

VMware SRM (Site Recovery Manager) offers simplified Disaster recovery solutions. It’s one of the most reliable DR product in the market. It can protect thousands of virtual machines with ease using centralized recovery plans and managed from the vSphere Web Client. Using policy-driven automation and the SDDC architecture to simplify ongoing DR management. VMware SRM can lower the TCO by 50% compared to other DR products or solutions exists in the market.

Continuous innovation, unmatched features , quality products make VMware market even stronger in Data-center virtualization. VMware’s hybrid cloud model with AWS makes a more interesting product in the market. So VMware will continue to increase the customer base and going to make more revenue than the current numbers for sure.
