How to upgrade SUN T5220 System Firmware Upgrade ?

We need to update the system firmware periodically to stay away from the bugs.Oracle hardware firmware can be download from the oracle website after logging with the support id. By upgrading the system firmware,system can support new devices,better performance,better availability and add more security  to the system. In a order to upgrade the system firmware,y ou need to halt the server before upgrading the system firmware.Here we will see how to upgrade the system firmware on SUN T5220 server.



1. Login to the lom using admin account .

2.Connect to the system console.

start /SP/console
Are you sure you want to start /SP/console (y/n)? y 
Serial console started.  To stop, type #.

(press enter a couple times until you get the login prompt)

3.In the server console ,login as root.If there is any local zone are running , just halt it.
   Just shutdown the global zone by using init 0. System will be back to “OK” prompt.

4.Type ~. to get the SP console back.

5.Power off the lom.

-> stop /SYS
Are you sure you want to stop /SYS (y/n)? y
Stopping /SYS

6.Verify that the power is off

-> show /SYS
power_state = Off

7.Perform the firmware upgrade by using the TFTP server  IP address on the load command.

-> load -source tftp://10.66.52.101/Sun_System_Firmware-7_2_7_d-SPARC_Enterprise_T5220+T5220.pkg
NOTE: A firmware upgrade will cause the server and ILOM to
      be reset. It is recommended that a clean shutdown of
      the server be done prior to the upgrade procedure.
      An upgrade takes about 6 minutes to complete. ILOM
      will enter a special mode to load new firmware. No
      other tasks can be performed in ILOM until the
      firmware upgrade is complete and ILOM is reset.
Are you sure you want to load the specified file (y/n)? y
Do you want to preserve the configuration (y/n)? y

When the server update is complete you should see:
Firmware update is complete.
ILOM will now be restarted with the new firmware.
->
(connection lost)

8.After few minutes  ilom will automatically up and try to connect again.

9.After login to ilom, start the system.

-> start /SYS
Are you sure you want to start /SYS (y/n)? y
Starting /SYS

10.Start up the console to monitor the system  boot progress

-> start /SP/console
Are you sure you want to start /SP/console (y/n)? y

11.Boot the local zones

 
12.Terminate the console by pressing the ~. or #.
 
We have successfully upgraded the system firmware.
